Electrical Contractor Licence Insurance Requirements

We have talked about insurance cover for Electricians in previous blogs (see them here), but it’s always worth going over and reiterating the important things.

Insurance requirements for an electrical contractor licence in the state of Queensland, according to Section 51 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 state:

An applicant for an electrical contractor licence must give the regulator—

(a) evidence that the applicant has public and products liability insurance for at least $5,000,000 under a contract of insurance approved by the regulator; and

(b) evidence that the applicant has consumer protection insurance for at least $50,000 under a contract of insurance approved by the regulator.

Insurance Cover for an Electrician

Electrical work comes with a high volume of potential danger due to the nature of the job. The various risks involved can include: onsite risks and public liability, material damage, product liability, professional indemnity and loss of data.

When working as an electrician, liability insurance is a must and covers two key financial risks: the potential for legal costs if having to defend a claim and also any compensation that may be required to pay a wronged party including their legal costs if a claim is ever made against you.

If in your business you are also required to do certification work, such as test and tag, you will also have a need for professional indemnity cover.

To be able to trade in Queensland, licensed electricians must also have consumer protection insurance.
